Addiction in the News
Addiction is an enormous social problem. The many negative consequences of addiction seem to appear in the news at least daily: car accidents while someone was driving under the influence, controversy over the legality of certain substances, workplace accidents that injured or killed multiple people, celebrity overdoses that resulted in the early death of a talented rising star, birth defects or withdrawal in babies born to addicted mothers, children who were abused and subsequently removed from the homes of addicted parents, and crimes related to substance abuse including dealing, smuggling, prostitution, theft, murder, and others. Despite the overwhelming number of disheartening stories related to addiction that seem to dominate the news, there are also many positive changes happening in America including new regulations about mental health (including addiction) for insurance companies, prescription drug take-back days offered by the Drug Enforcement Administration, and many others.
