Signs of Opiate Addiction (Oxycontin, Vicodin, Morphine)
Opiates are sometimes called depressants or downers because they depress the central nervous system. Signs of prescription opiate addiction are listed below.
- Small Pupils – Although pupil size varies by person, if you notice a comparatively dramatic difference between the possible addict’s pupils (also called “pinpoint pupils”) and those of others in the room, this could be a sign of opiate addiction.
- Sleepiness – Also called “nodding,” individuals with addictions to prescription opiates may not be alert during conversations and may temporarily fall asleep during inappropriate situations. If the person has developed tolerance to the drug, this phenomenon may disappear; therefore, do not dismiss opiate addiction simply because the person seems awake and responsive.
- Hearing Loss – Vicodin in particular can cause hearing loss.
- Itching – Opiates can cause itching, which may be more severe if the medication is not being used appropriately.
- Constipation – An addict may be unlikely to disclose this information, but if they hint that constipation has become a problem and have demonstrated other signs, you might suspect opiate abuse.
- Blurred Vision – An opiate addict may report difficult seeing.
